11:33 pm - INTPs in hiding?

As a member of INTP and INTJ communities, I find it interesting that (on LJ at least) posts are far more frequent on the INTJ communities. Is it that INTPs don't get round to posting, that they spend months weighing up possible replies or that they have better things to do with their time? I'll admit that this is not a very scientific study, but I was wondering what fellow INTPs thought about this.

1:01 pm - Turning off your mind?

I just recently started working at a self-serve frozen yogurt cafe to save up a little money before the fall semester starts. I thought it would be easy, and less taxing on my introverted self than, say, becoming a waitress.

I may not have to physically serve the customers, but the constant greeting of the customers, explaining the self-serve process, and answering questions has had an unexpected consequence. Whenever I work a night shift, by the time I get home to go to sleep it's almost impossible to quiet my mind. It's like I've lost the remote control. My mind rewinds and replays the events of my shift, as I scan for mistakes to prevent the next time, but I can't seem to turn it off.

I'm guessing I'll get used to it eventually, but do any of you have similar experiences while working jobs with a lot of social interaction?

4:13 pm - mbti has been resurrected!

I noticed that the former mbti community had been deleted and purged, so I decided to resurrect it. Unfortunately this doesn't preserve membership information, so if you were a member of it before and would like to be a member of the new one, you'll have to actually go and join the new one.

I'd appreciate it if you guys could join and spread the word to other MBTI communities you belong to... and hopefully we can get some discussion going again!

1:57 pm - Tips/exercises

Hey, I'm a browsing INFJ.

Was just wondering if you guys could give me tips on how to increase Ti or whatever thoughts you have about it (as that is your dominant function).

It just so happens to be my tertiary function.

Thanks a bunch!

8:24 pm - Description of INTP
growing_wise I found this description to be pretty accurate and detailed so I thought I'd share it here.   Apologies if you've seen it before.

INTP: The Theorist

INTPs are known for their quest for logical purity, which motivates them to examine universal truths and principles. They are constantly asking themselves and others the questions 'Why?' and 'Why not?' Clear and quick thinkers, they are able to focus with great intensity on their interests. They appreciate elegance and efficiency in thought processes and require them, even more so, in their own communications. They may be seen as unwilling to accept what everyone else regards as truth. While often low key in outward appearance and approach, the INTP is 'hard as nails' when challenging a truth. INTPs do not like to deal with the obvious. They are at their best in building conceptual models and developing unusual and complex ideas.

6:21 pm - hi!

Hey everyone! I'm new here, and I was wondering if any others among you took the tests at mypersonality.info? My results are here, if anyone should be interested =)

Click to view my Personality Profile page

(The "intelligences" thing is just something that calculates sort of how your brain and memory work =) It's also quite interesting to know, but doesn't have any links with the JMBT.)
Should be interesting to see some of your results!

6:19 pm - Astrology

I have tried this topic on some other INTP lists before and got absolute outrage. So I'm going to try it again here. Are there any INTP in this community who thinks that it might be possible to explain astrology scientifically?

5:17 pm - INTJ + INTP = Schizoid???

I have read about a co-relation of INTJ & INTP in regards to Schizoid personality disorder. I wondered what you all thought of this? I personally am an ENTP, but I can be very introverted at times - maybe more avoidant just because I don't want to be around different people (not because of shyness - I just do not want to interact at all at times) I read about schizoid exhibitionism as well, and that could be a person who would show a more extroverted side to their personality. ENTJ & ENTPs?? Maybe all NTs are really schizoid according to how it is defined. Who defined it anyways? Anyways I was curious as to your thoughts on this.

I`ve been looking for this topic and couldn`t find it, so here are my thoughts:

I think that there is a conection between the personality and the sexuality. I saw that some people here aren`t straight, I`m also bisexual, but do you think that there is a conection between the sexual desire and the personality?

For exaple I don`t feel strong sexual needs and I haven`t made sex (what about you?) And thus I feel excluded when people around me talk about relationships and sex. Does that happens to you?

I`ve red in forums for other INTPs that don`t feel strong sexual desire, but I want to know your opinion on the subject.

5:15 pm - Humour

(Background) I appear to be INTJ/P. The 'P' preference has become stronger over the last year so I've been exploring this side of my personality (/Background)

Looking at the profile on INTP.org I saw this - "Humour is another aspect which marks out the INTP. He can readily dream up jokes about almost any situation...If you see someone smirking and laughing at some private thought, without any obvious reason, he's probably an INTP".

I know I rarely take anything seriously unless I have to and sometimes have to stop myself from laughing at inappropriate times (even in the middle of an argument). So I was wondering: does anyone else identify with this, or is it just me?

10:52 am - Love
growing_wise I recently read this description of INTPs: "In love, you are an easy person to fall for, but not an easy person to stay in love with."

I have to admit that in my experience this is true.  Do you agree?  Why do you think it's so hard for people to stay in love with us?

11:17 am - Fire

Are you a pyro?

Not really... but I do like fire

Do you know how to start a fire?

Oh, yeah. I'm one of those hardcore one-match no-paper types.
I'm pretty good at it
I can do it if I cheat a lot

Do you ever contemplate what various objects/substances would look like when they burn?

Only when I'm in front of a fire

8:31 am - Religion and INTPs?

Hey everyone.

I've been doing some searching and I am really wondering what if any is the relationship between type and faith.
I'm very interested in religion and read quite a bit on all traditions and was raised an Unitarian Universalist and very secular. I like and respect Liberal Christianity ,Paganism and Buddhism .

I'm just interested...

What religion are you?
What were you raised?
Why did you switch?
What do you think NTs or INTPs would be seeking in a faith system?

10:35 pm

I've got a question; Do you easily close out the outside noises so much that a person has to shout in your ear almost to get you "back"?
I've done this all my life, I easily get distracted by things, and forget time and place.
So, do you? Or is this special for me?

9:28 am

Hi... I'm new to this community. I just recently found out that I was an INTP and did some research to see if it really was so, or if I got the wrong answer, but pretty much everything apply to me... Almost.
I'm basicallly a writer, fifteen, but still. I can write for hours and don't know that it's actually been hours...
Music and books are two other things I love, can read a 400 page book in two days (no bragging, just hours and hours of reading).  And I very easily get bored with things that don't interest me at all (school's a bitch)

But I joined this community to find out even more about INTP, and not just receive facts about it, but from real living people with INTP as a personality (is that right?)

11:56 am - slow down

Working as a web developer doesn't always afford me every-day opportunities to exercise my INTP-ness but occasionally for major new projects or enhancements I get to be involved in the design process and then I can bring my conceptualization skills to bear. This is especially true, I find, in database design, which offers a very pure opportunity for logical planning.

Designing the DB by myself, as I did on a recent project, is great fun for me. I feel unfettered to try things and tweak and come up with something that is powerful, easy to use, and expandable. Today, though, I'm working on a more collaborative design with some people and remembering the importance of stopping and taking a deep breath!

Design choices that seem obvious to me apparently aren't as obvious to other people! When somebody suggest we do such-and-such, I immediately see how choice that will make linking to the table annoying, or require extra hard-coding somewhere, or limit extensibility in the future. But others don't.

So I have to wait patiently as they work through the process to come to the same conclusions I've already come to. For someone who's not very patient, it can be hard, but at the same time it's important they understand why my idea is the best one (and it totally is!).

Fortunately, the people on my team are good people and they don't tend to get wedded to bad ideas. So with a little patience and careful explaining, I get my way and everybody is happy!

Here are some things I think about with database design:

- Is this easy to understand? Does it work similarly to the stuff we already have built? If someone who wasn't one of us came in and had to work on it, could they quickly figure it out?

- Does this design make my life easier? When I am writing queries, will I have to go out of my way to link the tables? Will certain fields of information be unnecessarily difficult?

- Clients always want to add new things later down the road, even if they say they won't. Is this design flexible enough that if they asked for X it would support that with little or no changes?

- Is it holistic and conceptually pure? (this last really only matters to me, and is mostly dependent on the first three anyway)

11:42 am - Mental health of INTPs?

I have been thinking about this quite a bit.
Is there a connection to certain personality types and that person's mental health?

I myself have ADD,Asperger's,Bipolar,Social Anxiety and NLD which is a learning disability of the right side of the brain it affects Motor skills,Math skills,Spatial Skills and Processing and Organization as well as Social Skills

I have heard of link between being an INTP and most of the conditions I have listed.
I have heard a lot about people who are INTP having ADD higher then the general populace and vice versa.

Mood disorders are also possibly linked to INTP people but seem to be more linked to INFP.

Anxiety seems to have a connection as well.

Also many people with Asperger's score as INTPs

Do you have any mental health issues?

Hope this will be interesting.

4:14 pm - you or someone like you

I've been hesitant to post this because it might sound an awful lot like self-promotion, but I think it might be of interest to other INTPs.

I recently had a short story published in a little online science fiction mag called 'Electric Spec'. It deals with, basically, that odd simultaneous feeling of attraction and repulsion that one gets when they're exposed to someone very much like themselves. On the one hand, there's this sense of 'cool, they're like me!' On the other there's a feeling of 'ew, I'm not like that, am I?' My story wasn't explicitly inspired by hanging around INTP communities like this one, but there are definitely times when I get that same feeling here.

The story is entitled "The Comfort of Mirrors" and it's about a scientist who has had a large number of clones made of himself - and what he does when several of them commit suicide. It also involves a rogue economist, and I can't tell you how proud of myself I am for slipping that in.

If that sounds interesting to you, or if you just want to know what a sci-fi story written by an INTP sounds like, check it out. If not, don't.

I'd love to hear some feedback.

12:20 pm - What to study when you are a non-math INTP?

Hi everyone.
I have what I hope is an interesting question.

What should an INTP study? as in good fields to major in and all that when you have bad math and spatial skills.

I'm not awful at math it's just not good enough to be in a very hard science.

I do like Economics and Biology but I worry about the amount of math and the like.
I love almost all aspects and types of the social sciences.
I am also very fond of many humanities fields especially History and Philosophy
I also am very fond of foreign languages.

So advice and suggestions anyone?
